The Flow Newsletter Spring Edition
May 2007
Mark Lammi Greetings!

Last year we began a journey to find the proper partner for The Flow who could help us bring it to the next level. It had to be someone with an established publishing background who shared our love of the glass community, especially us flamers. A tall order, but one that was fulfilled nonetheless.

We are pleased to announce that we have partnered with Maureen and Steven James of Glass Patterns Quarterly and Profitable Glass Quarterly and have been working hand in hand with them to produce our Japanese issue. Over the past twenty-four years, Maureen has guided these titles to become leaders in the art glass industry while never missing a deadline. As our new publisher, Maureen brings with her an entire staff of magazine professionals dedicated to providing our community the quality and service that you deserve. Wil and I will remain as editor in charge of content and design. This is a wonderful change that we hope will bring the following to our valued readers:
  • A timely print schedule.
  • More efficient service. We have a more complete infrastructure to handle your requests.
  • Faster mail service.
  • Increased print quality. PGQ and GPQ have set high standards for art glass publications.
  • You will now have a toll-free number to call Monday through Friday.  800-719-0769
We hope that you are as pleased with this partnership and more effective service as we are. As always, we want The Flow to be a reflection of our community and look forward to your feedback. Thank you for your years of patience and support.
Thoughts on Japan
by Milon Townsend

Milon TownsendWhile teaching in Japan, Milon discovered that conducting classes in a country with a culture and language different from your own requires special preparation. The reverence of the Japanese for teachers demanded the very best of his skills in sharing his art.
Micro Incalmos Made Easy
by Wil Menzies
Wil Menzies

Here is a great exercise for practicing your incalmo techniques in these small, relatively quick pieces. They use all the same principles as their larger-scale, blown counterparts, but these can be used for jewelry, stones, or even as part of larger incalmos.

A New Palette - The Lure of Satake
by Deb Crowley

Deb CrowleyHosting a group of Japanese glass beadmakers who wanted to experience Oregon helped introduce Deb to the wonders of Satake Glass. Her own experimentation and a much-anticipated class with Akihiro Ohkama will provide plenty of new bead adventures.
