The Flow Newsletter Fall 2011 Edition

Jennifer headshot

Dear Readers,

It's not always an easy or predictable road that we are on as glass artists, but it is an absolutely satisfying and rewarding one. The desire to continue to pursue our passion and our need to create something meaningful or expressive can allow us to view our experiences with renewed insight. The creative process can help cope with stress and be very meditative. For me, glass could be considered my therapist or counselor, so . . . no torch time = grouchy.

With production work, I've found that I can lose myself in the piece that I've made so many times and zone out on the flame. This leaves me with the mental space to quietly consider problems or difficult situations I am having trouble working out that have nothing to do with glass. There are other times, though, that I have a concept of my own that I feel I need to express. It may take me a while to work out the process in my head, but the longing won't go away until the piece is done. The feeling that I get is much different from that of prodo. There is a release of emotion.

The ability to adjust and shift between what we want to make and what sells can be precarious, especially in this economy. I find great satisfaction in making utilitarian objects. This is helpful when the economy is down, because with most purchases our "wants" are outweighed by our "needs." I enjoy the idea of glass being used every day instead of just being placed on the shelf. Glass that serves a purpose allows art to seep into our everyday lives.

So whether you use glass for your own selfish, therapeutic purposes as I do or are suffering from creative block, keep lighting the torch. If you don't know what to make, just put a rod in the flame and it will come to you.

As always . . . Keep your light shining and your torches lit!

Linh Le was born in 1982. At the age of three, her siblings exposed her to drawing, painting, and every medium in between. Today Linh focuses her study to butterflies and metamorphosis, since butterflies and their life cycle embody change and development. Linh uses glass to explore her creativity, and fixates on color, depth, and composition. This allows her to truly express the beauty of nature through her inspired vision. Emma Gerard

Emma's adventure into the professional craft world started when she enrolled in the ceramics program at Sheridan College in Oakville, Ontario, Canada. When she arrived, she was bitten by the glass bug and has been addicted to glass ever since. Her glass art is a balance between conceptual work that displays a touch of humor and fun and playful production work. It explores the fine line between the planning and research that goes into the conceptual side of art and experimentation in the studio. She is inspired by personal experiences and her environment. With this intention, she has set out to make work that is both well designed and thought provoking. To view more of Emma's glass art visit  www.emmagerard.com.

The Fire Divas' Mission

by Michelle Veizaga

If ever there were an art form with a purpose it would be glass, from protecting us in our cars and homes to the wonder we catch in children's eyes as they see the handblown ornaments on a Chirstmas tree. There is no end to what glass brings us, but what if it could do more? What if glass could actually make people come together for the greater good of an entire community? What if glass could help make a hurting parent's heart heal at the loss of a child? What if the people who dedicated themselves to this art form came together as a group and made it part of their glass journey to make a small but significant contribution on behalf of meaningful causes?
