Daniel Benway was a Grateful Dead devotee who was inspired to start creating works in glass while following the Dead on their tour circuit. He couldn’t craft pipes, as they were illegal at the time, so he created marbles and sold them at Dead shows. When the band stopped touring, Benway continued on his glass journey, refining his marble art to encompass little worlds containing 3D images of buildings and cities encased in glass. Joe Samuelson III takes us through Daniel’s progression from Deadhead marble maker to renowned marble artist.
