Glass Favors the Brave.

By hot glass and searing flame, we risk the burn of molten silica in our quest for art.

Why? What makes it so appealing? What incites this risky behavior?

We could more easily use colored pencils or take up watercolors or modeling clay. So what is it that brings us to this particular form of creative expression?

I think the compelling draw of hot glass work is that it is ìcoolî ñ that curiously elusive mixture of both beauty and danger that we all absorb culturally as adolescents. Beauty alone will not serve us, or we would choose a ìsaferî medium. No, we must prove our courageous nature by conquering the flame. We prove ours to be the greater accomplishment, as we stare willingly into the flame. It is no coincidence that fire is the symbol of the spirit.

Beauty may be fleeting, but glass lasts forever. (A torch may be hot, but how cool is that?!)
