Artist's Bio
Following a cosmic drive to make something from those really cool glass rods she kept seeing at her local stained glass supplier, Kathy Johnson started on her journey to make glass beads in 1991. With very little instruction Kathy began to create miniature glass beads that fascinated not only her, but a growing number of enthusiastic bead collectors. As these treasures began to sell she began to create miniature works of art. Fish, Whales and Seascapes began to emerge. All the while hot glass seemed to satisfy a need to create and explore.
Kathyís full time job was and is a retail Stained Glass Studio in Burien, WA called Glass Expressions. Spending any spare time she had, Kathy created beads. With emerging glass artists to watch and admire, Loren Stump, Andrea Guarino, Julie Clinton, Will Stokes and Sage Holland, Kathy could see the potential of what could be made.
In 1996 Emerald Downs Race Track opened near Seattle. Loving horses all her life, Kathy began to explore the world of sculpture. She poured her love of horses into making horses and it shows. Each horse is a realistic work of art. Exploring the animal world, Kathy makes Holstien Cows, Donkeys, Zebras, Llamaís, and now Dragons and Pegasus With Wings. She sells her horses and beads in galleries across the United States. She has become known by her horses but Kathy also creates Universe Beads and other beads. Creating glass treasures is still a pleasure. As Kathy says, ìThere is nothing like the feel of a glass bead!î |
